Why Stop Now

What was the film actually trying to say? Drugs are bad and you should fight against them? A crippled dealer can speak to your soul and influence your life? When you are good at something, you should also pursue it and not be discouraged by anyone, not even yourself? Imaginary friends hidden in a sock are not beneficial for little girls? The American Civil War can change your love life? These are all big truths that sometimes sound quite funny, but in the end, they are not funny at all. "Why Stop Now" is a film that wants to address many topics, but in the end, it only resolves one or two. We have Jesse Eisenberg here, who plays a talented guy. Talented in playing the piano, but he can't devote himself to it as he would like. His mother is dependent and cannot properly take care of her daughter, so Jesse is actually a father to his sister. The little sister has problems at school because her sock puppet, who speaks very obscenely, sometimes goes too far. Besides dealing with this problem, Jesse also gets involved in the drug trade. Thanks to his knowledge of Spanish, he becomes an interpreter during a drug deal, which eventually almost prevents him from passing his conservatory entrance exams. But this is a "comedy", moreover, American, so not everything is as terrible as it seems. It all gets resolved quite well, and even though the film tries to be funny and absurd at times, it is neither. It's just a collection of strange scenes that don't really have to be related to each other. Jesse Eisenberg is a talented actor, he just needs to choose his films better. Tracy Morgan is a bad actor and he plays the same character in "30 Rock" as he does everywhere else. But after several times, it simply becomes boring. Melissa Leo plays something here, but what is the point when the film as a whole feels quite unnecessary. Not funny comedy trying to moralize, which, however, comes across as an exaggerated attempt to give the film some depth. Except that these films are simply not built from the beginning to have any depth. Even the romantic story here is not worth much. Actually, it's not worth anything.
