Skateistan: To Live and Skate Kabul

Murza, 17, and Fazilla, 22, live in the Afghan capital Kabul and share a hobby: skateboarding. A centre called "Skateistan" has opened in the city where they can ride the U-ramp and just hang out. The unique skate park - which is located on the ruins of buildings destroyed during the war - gives them the chance to forget about their everyday reality; Murza used to wash cars, while Fazilla sells chewing gum. Both come from poor families who often lack food to eat. Skateistan helps this pair and other young people to think differently about the world and themselves. Murza, who has terrible memories of the war and the Taliban regime, says that people need to get together and start building a new Afghanistan, and that somebody who wants to foster peace in the country should be in power. For him and his friends, skating - and Skateistan - offers the hope of a new and better life. (One World)
