Une séparation

Ce film de conversations majestueusement écrit et réalisé est telle une cascade de dominos d’événements imprévisibles qui rend des situations banales de la vie quotidienne à l’origine de drames pouvant ruiner les vies de familles entières. C’est palpitant, tendu et émotionnellement éreintant. On est au niveau des meilleurs drames de Woody Allen et de Mike Nichols, avec l’Iran et sa culture comme toile de fond plus exotique. Il est étonnant de constater que les gens dont l’âme et l’esprit sont emprisonnés par les lois de croyances si radicales souffrent finalement des mêmes problèmes personnels et familiaux que n’importe qui d’autre dans le monde. Cool. Cool, cool, cool. It’s not bad sometimes to look at how things work in countries with different mentalities. A fantastic family-court drama that, among other things, captivates with how not a single one of the protagonists is morally spotless. I’ve no idea whether the Iranian legal system works exactly like this (in fact, my Central European prejudices led me to believe that it’s much worse), but it doesn’t matter. An entertaining and thrilling film and a great candidate for the Oscar in the foreign language category. (16/12/2011)

A fantastic screenplay that unfolds from the marital conflict of longtime partners to reveal, in a fascinating way, a rich drama about guilt, punishment and lies. Precisely filmed, edited at a cutting pace, and acted economically with a sense of miniature drawing. A textbook family drama that has no problem with phrases and literalism. A film full of vivid characters, stories and pulsating questions on which several moral positions can be taken. A free film about simple things from a country that is not free, which Czech filmmakers have been trying to make in vain for years. (08/07/2011)

It’s sad when, with so many adults around, the only person with sense is a kid. It is lucky that it’s in such a good movie. This movie is attractive and “rewarding for the Western viewer" is not just thanks to the reaction of a diametrically different culture to the breakup of a relationship, but mainly thanks to how good, surprising, engrossing and emotion provoking at every moment (and in every respect) it is throughout. Simply despite all the unhappy story, this movie enthralls; with its story, twists, authenticity, actors, details, hints, everything that is not said... Simply everything. (27/12/2011)

I admit that I am not particularly enthusiastic about the wave of Iranian films that flooded world festivals a few years ago and made many cinephiles talk about Iranian cinema with boundless admiration, so I shrugged my shoulders at several acclaimed Iranian films. Therefore, I approached the Oscar-winning film A Separation with cautious skepticism. Fortunately, it was unnecessary. A Separation is an unpretentious psychological drama that is far from the shallow production of the American mainstream. It avoids straightforward activism but subtly and incredibly effectively analyzes the system through one disintegrating family. In a European context, this film could be likened to significant films of the Polish era of moral unrest. Poverty, religious radicalism, and the women's question, not on a mass scale but under the guise of institutions, conservative traditions, and general hypocrisy, constantly simmering frustration from the authoritarian religious regime and cultural isolation (the film's protagonist is planning to emigrate and is willing to sacrifice her marriage and even risk separation from her daughter because of it). A small film with a great impact that can hit a sensitive spot with surgical precision and evoke strong emotions. Overall impression: 95%. (06/12/2012)

Vu dans le cadre du « Challenge Tour 2015 : 30 jours de cinéma mondial ». Film numéro 24 – Iran. Un film qui a attaqué mon chef de file, la Roumanie, mais qui reste pour l'instant juste derrière, en deuxième position. La rupture entre Nader et Simin prouve que même un film qui ne comporte pas de scènes d'action, de violence et de sexe peut être extrêmement fascinant et nous garder en haleine pendant 120 minutes. Nous tous, depuis la chaleur de nos maisons en République tchèque, sommes à des années-lumière d’imaginer comment les choses se passent réellement en Iran, alors je m’abstiendrai de claironner des pseudovérités à l’aveuglette disant qu’en Iran, ils ont telle ou telle loi, qu’ils ont telle ou telle coutume ou que le film a élagué, déformé ou censuré la réalité. Je suis immunisé contre le massage médiatique selon lequel l'Iran est dangereux, constitue une menace pour la paix mondiale, etc. J'ai beaucoup aimé le film en tant que tel et il est très stimulant et enrichissant d'observer, à travers les yeux d'un habitant d'Europe centrale, le conflit entre deux couples mariés qui ne cesse de s'aggraver et de se demander ce à quoi mènerait une telle situation en Tchéquie, en Allemagne ou en France. L'aspect le plus fort du film, du moins en ce qui me concerne, est que je n'ai intérieurement catalogué aucun des personnages comme étant totalement positif ou totalement négatif, ce qui maximise le réalisme vu qu’aucun d'entre nous n'est un ange ou un diable. À un moment donné, j'ai sympathisé avec un personnage et me suis mis de son côté, puis, plus tard, mes préférences se sont inversées. Dans la même veine, je suis heureux que la Berlinale ait accordé un crédit égal aux quatre protagonistes. Si je ne me trompe, c'est le deuxième film iranien que je vois dans ma vie, et les deux m’ont laissé une très bonne impression. (24/04/2015)

The Iranian movie simply deserves attention and it is evident that it has somewhat transformed since the 90s, to make it clear that there is also development here. When watching the film "A Separation" you will realize that the director, as well as the screenwriter in one person, has an interesting sense of humor as well as a dramatic storyline. Everything comes together in a sometimes absurd story, but one that is still very realistic. (13/04/2016)
