A beautiful work by Victor Sjöström with a theme as old as mankind itself. While at home in Sweden he captivated with Ingeborg Holm and The Phantom Carriage, while in America he got Lon Chaney for a role that had already been certified to Valdemar Psilander and Gunnar Tolnæs, and later to Emil Jannings. The story of He Who Gets Slapped is about the fall of an intellectual to the bottom of the circus ring. After losing his illusions, his career and his beloved wife, Paul Beaumont becomes an attraction. A young love blossoms naturally around him between the artists - the over-sweet Norma Shearer and the tender John Gilbert... It is an excellent film with great performances and an ageless message. It is encounters like this that only strengthen my faith in the "great silent miracle of the silver screen."
