Automne 1977, à Enfield, dans la grande banlieue de Londres. Dans leur chambre, Janet Hodgson, 11 ans, et Margaret, son aînée de deux ans, se racontent des histoires à faire peur quand des coups violents retentissent dans l'armoire. Puis la commode se met à bouger. Après une série d'autres événements du même type, la police puis l'inévitable presse tabloïd, alertée par un voisin, accréditent la thèse d'un phénomène paranormal. Un membre de la Société de recherche psychique (SRP), Maurice Grosse, s'installe dans ce foyer pauvre et sans père pour tenter d'élucider le mystère. Secrètement brisé par la mort accidentelle, un an plus tôt, de sa fille, elle aussi prénommée Janet, et anxieux d'échapper à la désolation qui a englouti son couple, il établit avec la cadette des filles Hodgson, que semblent viser les manifestations du poltergeist, un lien particulier. Mais la SRP dépêche chez les Hodgson l'un de ses "experts", le journaliste Guy Playfair, qui se montre d'abord sceptique.. (Arte)

A sort of a more realistic description of the story told by the movie The Conjuring 2. I was worried that it would be treated in a boring manner, which is something the English sometimes manage to do with their dry attitude. But eventually, I was pleasantly surprised by the characters, as well as by the manner of storytelling with which you can really feel that it is much more genuine that whatever I had seen before. These were definitely two hours that weren’t boring at all. On the contrary, I really liked the civil attitude of all those connected to the story.

Definitely don't watch The Enfield Haunting thinking it's just some tea party. The very first scene is quite unpleasant, and there are plenty more that can give you chills. And it really doesn't have to be just about what's happening in the haunted house. The film is perhaps a little too focused on finding out what the truth is, if there is one, but it still has a good atmosphere and, most importantly, good characters.
