The incredible story of a young man accompanied by a film camera from the age of eighteen, on his life’s journey between prisons and short intermezzos outside; after another eighteen years, we leave him as a 36-year-old man, an unlikely writer, a seriously ill patient, and unfortunately still an incorrigible criminal. The story of René “Czech Villon” unfolds against the backdrop of significant political changes in Central Europe whose reflections remain omnipresent in the film. René’s history opens in a prison full of socialist banners, continues during the “Velvet Revolution” and finds him back in prison at the time of the Czech Republic joining the EU. anglais If this had had a proper ending, I would have given full marks. From my egoistic viewer’s point of view, it would have been better to end this either at the “turning point" of his being released from jail in 2002 or else to wait a few years to see what life brings. And that’s how it ends... Nohow. ()

anglais René and his story are part of Helena Třeštíková's work, in which I have no active interest in the person I am watching. Yes, René started off badly in life, but after his mother showed up there was nothing left to think about. ()

anglais Another great documentary project from Helena Třeštíková; I love her work. René’s story has potential and gets off to a good start. But unfortunately, due to the actions of the main protagonist, it doesn’t go anywhere much and we don’t see much more that the bars and the four walls of his cell. René is a hopeless case and I couldn’t believe how many chances he needed to make something of himself. Due to his behavior, you come away with a bland and stagnant taste in y our mouth after watching this documentary. So although the end result is a well-made documentary, it is just a mediocre and easily-forgettable story. ()
