anglais Václav Havel is a bit unlucky, and considering the quality of his work, perhaps he's had rather good fortune, that his work never had the chance to be judged impartially and was never exposed to the tough competition of the free market. During the totalitarian era, he was persecuted and banned, while after November 1989, he was uncritically exalted. He will be remembered more as a public figure and symbol of political change than as a playwright - if only because the vast majority of his dramas deal with rather abstract themes far removed from the experiences and imaginations of ordinary people. This is probably the only genuinely comprehensible play suitable for a wider audience. The TV adaptation from the early 90s is well cast, but even so, Havel's text, which deals with the snobbery of a wealthy couple trying to impress a visitor, didn't particularly excite me. Overall impression: 55%. ()
