When Gerald, a psychotic, escapes from a mental institution leaving a trail of murders behind him, he heads for the city and straight to the cemetery. When the hip kids from Kent High School decide to hang out in the same cemetery that night, they, too, become taken over by the creatures from the dead who lurk there. One-by-one, they are overcome by these demons of the night. By day, the kids appear normal. But at night, they turn into the same ghouls who devoured them. Their only goal: to transform the rest of humanity into creatures from the dead.
It isn't long before Mel, a loner at the high school, starts to take notice. Mel tries to inform the Principle of the school, but neither he nor anyone else will listen. Mel decides to take matters into his own hands and returns to the cemetery where he finds Gerald hiding out. Even though Gerald is clearly not 'all there', Mel believes his terrifying story of human consumption by the dark, unknown presence. In a race against the approaching fear of night, Mel and his girlfriend Suzanne are the only ones left alive to either try to stop the force or run from it.
