The Mephisto Waltz lacks that crucial element that would make it a truly good horror film. That crucial element is an atmosphere that would add a proper dose of tension to the story, where you'd be on edge, anticipating what will happen next. This effect is absent here because you will be able to predict the individual steps that will occur in the plot. It's a shame because in that case, The Mephisto Waltz would have been a great horror movie for me. This way it is only very slightly above average.
