Novembre 1967. Geneviève Émery vit avec sa mère, une veuve désargentée qui tient un magasin de parapluies à Cherbourg. En dépit de la désapprobation de Mme Émery, Geneviève aime le garagiste Guy Fouchet. Ils se jurent une passion éternelle et font des rêves d'avenir.
