It is by a celebration that the village is preparing for the inauguration of Sámson Mihály into the Vitéz Order. Competition is keen for roles of a theatrical performance to be acted out by local residents, and the local choir is busy rehearsing. Two young ladies, Jolán, the postlady, and Sárika, the daughter of the parish priest, compete for Kopácsi, the railway traffic assistant. During the rehearsal of the play, Jolán's mother spreads the rumour that Kopácsi has already proposed to her daughter, although the young man is more attuned to Sárika now. During the celebrations, Sámson's and Sárika's attention is turned towards each other. She makes him forget about the wealthy bride selected for him, and in the end the two duly join in marriage.
