Rohr, a famous soap manufacturer in Berlin, has the idea that he should use the photograph of a woman to promote his newest product. A clumsy, self-appointed staff photographer, Schmidt, makes a blunder by drinking too much wine at a village wedding party and taking photographs of Simon Anna, the beautiful daughter of the landowner of Udvard, who will be a suitable model for the promotion. Rohr starts his own investigation to find the girl whom he is virtually infatuated with, while Schmidt is trying to find an excuse for a day spent in a state of drunkenness, of which, he knows, some account has to be given. Rohr and Anna then meet quite by accident, the story being wrapped up by Schmidt, by now able to remember the scene of his "lost day", assigned to the job of taking photographs, this time at the wedding party of Rohl and Simon Anna.
