The architect Orosz András is at an auction bidding for an old period furniture, an armchair. Finally a pretty woman, Klári takes it from under his nose for 500 pengoes. With the help of his friend and business partner, the master builder Anday Péter, András starts to chase the armchair, or rather the lady. They find the old piece in the house of Bihari, the lawyer, who is her husband and who is happy to foist the expensive furniture on Orosz. But the woman does not let him. She would sooner break up her marriage than part with the armchair. She moves back to her father's house, the retired old colonel.
