Les rues de New York ne sont pas très sûres. Depuis peu, une vague de disparitions étranges met la ville en émoi. Des passants, hommes, femmes, âgés ou jeunes, sont happés en pleine rue par d'horribles créatures vivant dans les égouts de la mégapole. Aidés par des sans-logis, un journaliste et un policier enquêtent pour comprendre ce qui se cache dans les entrailles de la ville où d'immondes mutations pourraient bien mettre en péril toute la population new-yorkaise... An exemplary 1980s horror B-movie that impresses with good masks (light bulbs instead of eyes!) and a relatively good atmosphere inside a Manhattan sewer. Unfortunately, the camera spends more time at the desk in the office where the characters deal with the mysterious disappearance of people rather than showing us the delicious gore. I’m begging for a remake by R.Z., as this film really does show its age in some moments.

The name, or rather it’s meaning, hints at a lot more gory fun that what you get in the end, though the last 30 minutes at least are a good example of a typical 80s horror movie. The make-up is very good and the interesting atmosphere builds up together with the number of mutants (i.e. in the last 30 minutes). The acting is not important, and neither is the zero originality of the story – as it’s typical in films like this. It’s a pity that the plans for a Rob Zombie remake seem to have been dropped, he would have done a very good job with the material.
