1963. Rachel Flax, mère célibataire, élève seule ses deux filles, Charlotte et Kate. Libre et fantasque, refusant toute forme de routine, elle n’hésite pas à déménager régulièrement, en fonction de ses humeurs. La famille vient de s’installer dans le Massachusetts. Alors que sa jeune sœur est une passionnée de natation, Charlotte, 15 ans, se découvre une vocation religieuse, à la grande surprise de sa mère. (Arcadès)

Mermaids is at first glance a simple film, but it is also so nicely and sweetly acted that you swallow its straightforwardness with hook, line and sinker. The central female trio absolutely charmed me. Cher can not only sing beautifully, but also play a mother with a very dynamic lifestyle. The horny and bossy Winona Ryder with her colourful inner monologue and the endearingly goofy water and wine lover Christina Ricci also handled their roles with grace and offered, like Cher, memorable performances. Bob Hoskins wasn’t bad either and he made a likeable couple with Cher. As the saying goes, there is beauty in simplicity, and this is triply true of this film. Now all you have to do is say "whoosh" to the TV and blast the title song into your ears.
