Alphonse Tram (Gérard Depardieu) est chomeur et quelque peu lunatique. Dans le métro, il engage la conversation avec un inconnu et retrouve un peu plus tard ledit inconnu mourant et son couteau planté dans le ventre. Rentrant chez lui, on lui annonce qu'un nouveau locataire s'est installé dans la tour où il vit. C'est un policier et c'est avec lui qu'il va reconnaitre, peu de temps après, le corps de son épouse assassinée dans un terrain vague. Quand, le lendemain, le meurtrier se présente chez Alphonse, ils sympathisent immédiatement puis trinquent avec le commissaire descendu en voisin. Un autre homme se présentera à son tour. Celui-ci a tout vu dans le métro et veut engager Alphonse pour son propre compte. Résigné, Alphonse est au rendez-vous pour abattre un homme conduisant une automobile. Or ce conducteur n'est autre que l'inconnu à la recherche de sa propre mort, qu'il trouvera effectivement ce jour-là. Reste sa veuve qu'Alphonse, le commissaire et le meurtrier sympathique prennent en charge. Mais celle-ci abat le médecin venu la soigner. Les trois hommes décident de fuir à la campagne pour y trouver le repos. Ils ne le trouveront pas car apparait un nouveau personnage qui abat le "meurtrier sympathique", le prenant pour Alphonse. Celui-ci fait disparaitre le commissaire avant d'etre lui-meme piégé par la très jolie fille de l'homme assassiné dans le métro. (UGC Distribution)

I am not really a fan of French film, as the style does not resonate with me. However, sometimes it does hit the spot. Interestingly enough, the title of such films is often related to food. Today it was the absurdly absurd Buffet Froid. Plus, Delicatessen has long been on my top ten list. In the background and at the same time at the center of everything was the tower block; a building so ominous that it managed to entice even a violinist to move in!! I was intrigued by the high concentration of murderers per square meter, and I often laughed at jokes that many Americans would find inappropriate. Although I could never really warm up to Gérard Depardieu, his Alphonse was hilarious. However, my favorite character was Inspector Morvandieu, a big shot in the Parisian criminal underworld and a star of the resistance. This man more than made up for his weakness thanks to his six-barreled revolver, from which he could fire up to fifteen times without reloading. / "This is the first time I will see a man die." "Me too. I am usually late." / "Boss, we found a strangled woman on the fifth floor!" "Leave her, she is with us." / Lesson learned: A hitman may not share your sense of humor.

This film somehow nicely captures the atmosphere of the time it was made, which is good. It has a dirtier feel to it, which suits this odd comedy. It's also a pretty good crime drama, but it didn't manage to blow me away. By the way, it wasn't until this film that I realized how long Gérard has been on the scene and it really has been quite a few years.
