Breaking Bad

Breaking Bad (2008)

It grabbed me from the first episode like no other show before or since, and didn't let go until the final carnage of season five. It was a thrilling ride in every way, and the creators and everyone involved deserve great thanks for the amazing visually-emotional experience!

This Is Us

This Is Us (2016)

This Is Us is a personal favorite of mine. From the very first episode, I fell in love not only with the amazing family but also with the unique style of storytelling and the very catchy music. I'm moved by almost every episode and I'm certainly not ashamed of it, because who among us wouldn't want to experience the kind of family togetherness that is on display here? And I really don't give a damn if the Pearsons are the prototype of the happy American family or if it's all just far-fetched. One needs something to dream about, especially in today's hectic times when traditional family values are somewhat sidelined. I'll just keep dreaming my dream with this artisanal delicacy.

The Fall

The Fall (2013)

I would have never believed that watching almost simultaneously police investigations of murders and at the same time the killer in action would be so intriguing and suspenseful, even though I know the perpetrator beforehand. The creators only used this approach in two seasons, but even the third one was worth it. It was more psychological and had a significantly slower pace, which incredibly worked in building up the final episode full of aggression and total self-destruction of Paul Spector. The series boasts great performances from almost everyone involved. Focusing on the main characters, Gillian Anderson as the investigator definitely did not disappoint and Jamie Dornan as the killer was absolutely superb. At times I found myself rooting for him to get out of it all, which I don't think has ever happened to me in any crime drama, to sympathize with a negative character like that. He was able to play on a touching note as well, for example, in moments when his expression conveyed that he truly loved his daughter. The Fall is undoubtedly one of the best series I've seen so far. I have to recommend it.

Gomorra

Gomorra (2014)

After watching four seasons, I have to say that Gomorrah is undoubtedly the best mafia series I've ever seen. All the seasons hold the quality bar so high that I can't say which one I liked the most. It's fascinating that there's actually no one outright virtuous here, yet I always found someone I sympathized with... until they became even more of a lunatic in killing than the others. The characters of Ciro Di Marzio and Genna Savastano were the most interesting for me. I was usually rooting for one or the other, so when Ciro went to his eternal hunting grounds at the end of season three, I thought season four was going to be kind of a dud. Fortunately, my assumption was not confirmed and after a few episodes, I didn't even remember Ciro anymore. Genna's new business interest and the events surrounding Patrizia Santoro made up for his absence. Overall, I would like to highlight the amazing authenticity of most of the scenes, the well-developed characters of the main actors, and the generally great acting performances. I'm also a big fan of the theme song, which adds an incredible amount of atmosphere to the show.

The Killing

The Killing (2011)

I would never have believed that I would like an American remake of a Scandinavian series more, but in this case, I did. The original Nordic crime drama The Killing is clearly better than the American The Killing in the first season, but the Americans take the reins in the later seasons. The psychology of the characters, especially the detective duo Linden & Holder, is brilliantly portrayed, with a chemistry between them that is hard to describe in words. There is no shortage of gloomy and chilling atmosphere, escalating tension, and unexpected twists. That's how I imagine a detective series whose every episode I will hungrily devour.

Narcos

Narcos (2015)

The third season about the Cali Cartel is a bit weaker than the first and second, focusing on the life of Pablo Escobar and his capture. But as a whole, it works very well. The smooth interlacing of the plot with documentary footage contributes to the quality of the series. This gave me the feeling that the filmed story did not deviate too much from reality. This comprehensive work is of considerable value, especially in that the viewer unfamiliar with the conditions in Colombia learns what atrocities certain egotistical individuals committed in the interests of power, influence, and wealth. From all that the filmmakers served us on a golden platter, a rather frightening thought has taken root in my head about how easy it is to corrupt perhaps every political system...
