J'accuse (2019)

anglais Whatever you may think of Roman Polanski, you certainly cannot deny his ability to provide solid direction and a certain dexterity in staging, as he also proves with this historical movie An Officer and a Spy, which focuses on the infamous Dreyfus affair of the late 19th century. The beginning of the movie drags on a bit, but then the scandalous story of a great judicial injustice (told from the point of view of the army officer, Georges Picquart, brilliantly played by Jean Dujardin) completely absorbed me. My overall experience was enhanced by the background music by Alexandre Desplat. (80%)

Zuza v zahradách (2022)

anglais A simple, sweet story that has a real chance of appealing to child and adult audiences alike, the charming and incredibly beautiful animation makes it stand out. Looking at the beautiful overgrown garden, I was completely transported back to my childhood. (80%)

Očitý svědek (2021)

anglais There were many eyewitnesses to the bloody Přerov Massacre, but none of them found the courage to at least try to prevent the atrocities committed against mostly innocent people, which unfortunately seems to me to be quite typical of our Czech nature. We certainly have nothing to boast about in this respect. It has always been said that culture is the conscience of a nation, and it is doubly true here. Jiří Havelka never ceases to amaze me with the vigor with which he embarks on new and interesting projects. My only criticism of this otherwise very meritorious movie is a certain monotony, which, as time goes on, means an increasing lack of attention from the audience. At least I think so. But otherwise, all the actors involved here handle their roles with unprecedented authenticity. (65%)

Všechno bude fajn (2017)

anglais This movie couldn't be more apt. Director Robin Kvapil expressed all those commonly known truths (often with a reach far beyond the borders of Brno) in such an unvarnished and incredibly funny way that I was doubled over with laughter. Even so, this is primarily a bitterly sarcastic and caustically bitter picture of the times we lived and still live in. (90%)

O sportovci (1994)

anglais Some of the photos are really great, but unfortunately not all of them. In my opinion, to make a full-fledged movie documentary, you need to do much more than just to put hundreds of pictures together and add a suitable musical background. (45%)

Cesta do Říma (2015)

anglais Director Tomasz Mielnik has made a rather strange comedy, full of absurdities and interesting images, giving you quite a lot of space to reflect on the meaning of it all. It's just a shame that, overall, the movie doesn’t have a completely compact feel to it. (65%)

More Miko (2022)

anglais It bothers me terribly that Czech society is so openly racist and xenophobic, which is unfortunately confirmed not only by this documentary but also by the overall negative attitude of Czechs toward dark-skinned foreigners. I'm not comfortable living in this atmosphere... In any case, truck driver Jaroslav Miko is one of the few people in our country with a deep humanistic feeling and a desire to help all those in need. Hats off to his determination and the boundless perseverance with which he continually takes on windmills. Often it requires a good deal of courage and self-denial. (70%)

À la poursuite de Ricky Baker (2016)

anglais I really enjoyed this adventurous journey through the New Zealand bush. It had pace, enough tension and of course there was no lack of emotions. I absolutely loved the style of humor, enhanced by scenes full of absurdities and exaggerations, which fed all the strange characters that appeared in the plot. Even Sam Neill impressed me, even though I don't like him much otherwise. But he played the role of the surly surrogate uncle really well. (85%)

Annette (2021)

anglais The unusual musical Annette, adapted from the stage production, is a brilliantly crafted tragic romance, both cinematically and musically, and it also works well as a sharp critique of the artificial world of show business, which leaves no room for true love. It is certainly not a movie that will appeal to the masses, but it will certainly find an audience. Fans of the band Sparks and of Adam Driver, who is here in top acting form, will be over the moon (75%)

Mezi fjordy (2020)

anglais Twin brothers, Lukáš and Filip Polách, are both cute and total fools, as they put their own necks on the line every day to enjoy a little adrenaline. However, I sincerely envy them the beautiful God-forsaken and tourist-forsaken place they have chosen to live. I also really like their philosophy of life, because living in harmony with nature is also a big dream of mine. And where else could such desires be fulfilled than in Iceland. If anyone here is bothered by the fact that they have a limited vocabulary, they both couldn't care less. What they normally experience everyday will remain just a dream for most viewers. P.S.: I would have liked to see a separate documentary about the fearless farmer Betty, whose workplace I found enchanting. (85%)
