Muriel (1994)

anglais A comedy-drama about the coming-of-age and maturation of a country girl seeking happiness in the big city. It's a very positive film that reminds me of Love Actually and one I still enjoy returning to. While ABBA's music appears in many films, in this case, the combination of this upbeat music with the film's story is perhaps the most successful. Overall impression: 90%. It was in this movie that I discovered the excellent actress Toni Collette, who soon after broke into Hollywood thanks to it.

Černá punčocha (1986)

anglais A below-average film that, aside from a weak screenplay, mainly suffered from the miscasting of the lead role. Milan Karpíšek was inexperienced, having mostly performed on the opera stage until then, and his performance on screen reflects this. Overall impression: 25%.

La Bataille d'Alger (1966)

anglais A legendary film about one of the last colonial wars, fought with extraordinary tenacity on both sides. A markedly political film in the best traditions of Italian neorealism. The film's success was due not only to the director but also to screenwriter Franco Solinas, a well-known writer. The film is crafted using a documentary approach to create the impression of an authentic documentary. One of the co-producers was Yacef Saadi, a direct participant in the uprising.

Requiem pro panenku (1991)

anglais A strikingly filmed, yet ultimately superficial movie that is far removed from the real events and characters it is based on. Filip Renč is a film professional who excels at directing commercials and music videos, but in feature films, he always tends to lean towards kitsch to some extent. This film is less about genuine drama and more about a carefully calculated play on the audience's emotions. Incidentally, this piece is among the better, perhaps the best, work he has done in feature films. If the film works, it is also due to Aňa Geislerová's presence and the overall smart casting. Overall impression: 60%.

Starman (1984)

anglais By the mid-80s, John Carpenter was a well-established director of stylish B-movies that had a respectable commercial reception within their means. As a result, he was given the opportunity to direct a generously budgeted sci-fi film for a major studio about the arrival of an alien on our planet. Although I consider Carpenter a solid director and don't see the film's weakness in his direction, the movie didn't impress me when I saw it in the movie theater. The problem lies in the screenplay and the overall approach to the topic. It’s a bland sci-fi romance that often elicited a bemused smile and, in one instance, even a chuckle from me - particularly when Karen Allen's character learns that their son will one day be an engineer. Overall impression: 45%.

Le Parrain (1972)

anglais An audience-attractive theme, a strong story, interesting characters, quality direction, and a luxurious cast. What more could you want? This is one of the rare cases where artistic critics and viewers alike agreed and appreciated one of the seminal works of modern cinema. Overall impression: 95%.

Lexx (1997) (série)

anglais I am going to say it simply and straightforwardly, as Lexx deserves. It is a fully decked-out trash that has everything, but also charming trash that is made with the full knowledge of its creators and with love. It is a tribute to naive trash comics and whimsical "sci-fi" TV series from the beginning of television broadcasting. The film's main advantage is its originality and its exclusive position because, due to its bizarre nature, it has no equivalent competitor in related genres. A small cult of fans are tuned in to the same wavelength as the writers and directors of Lexx. Lexx has practically nothing in common with classic sci-fi, it gives up on any scientific theories, and it doesn't even attempt to depict any complex philosophical ideas. Its goal is to entertain but to entertain through the sense of humor of people who are aware of the absurdity of their hobbies. Lexx is not stupid at all, and its trashiness has nothing in common with the trashiness of mainstream pseudo-mythical series like Xena or Hercules. The creators choose motifs, characters, settings, and overall set design in such a way that they avoid the mass audience. Their characters and adventures are so perverse that only a minority of enthusiasts can find enjoyment in them. One of the favorite activities in the first series, for example, is the consumption of live brains aboard a spaceship. By the way, the spaceship itself is a combination of machinery technology with the living body of a gigantic fly, and the crew of the spaceship actually feeds on its excrement. Various "biotechnology" and insect elements are typical for the series. It is teeming with cannibals and mutants of all kinds. Considering that the series was filmed in Canadian studios, where American TV networks also enjoy shooting B-grade series, the presence of several guest American actors, who are legends of B-grade production, is typical for Lexx. Lexx will probably not receive average ratings; it will either captivate or be ruthlessly discarded. My overall impression is between 3-4 stars, considering the different quality of individual episodes. Visually, Lexx is influenced by pop art and contains several fetishistic motifs.

Spider-Man (2002)

anglais This comic book adaptation didn't turn out badly, but it lacks atmosphere and more developed characters. Its major advantage is the casting of Tobey Maguire, who comes across as very natural, elegant, and likable. He is simply an outstanding actor. Overall impression: 60%.

Jackie Brown (1997)

anglais From the perspective of film values that are important to me, Jackie Brown represents a true peak of Tarantino's films. After that, an unstoppable decline followed, and truth be told, the quality of his films plummeted like a fighter jet hit by a missile. This is not a cheap flashy film and will probably disappoint fans of wild action and violence complemented by bizarre humor and shocking lines. It is a moderate film, which, despite the genre framework of a classic crime story, focuses primarily on human relationships. It is a strong love story of two aging individuals who may have their last chance to start over and do better. Tarantino slowly and patiently builds up the film's atmosphere until its suspenseful finale. He pays attention to the dialogues, and where necessary "cool" catchphrases are present, but to a reasonable extent and where the script requires it. These characters can be trusted. It is Tarantino's most mature film with several interesting performances and perhaps his boldest, as it represents a betrayal of the traditional fan community. It is no coincidence that he came up with this film after his famous Oscar-winning masterpiece, Pulp Fiction when he felt that even such a leap would be handled by his audience. Overall impression: 90%.

Pulp Fiction (1994)

anglais A breakthrough film of the 90s that gave birth to the Quentin Tarantino cult and marked the transformation of its genre. A skillful mix of violence and vulgarity combined with a clever screenplay that skillfully intertwines storylines and connects individual storylines. It became the most financially successful American film made in the 90s outside of major studios. Audiences appreciated Tarantino's inventiveness, as film production in the previous decade had been desperately sterile and unoriginal. They were fascinated by the raw violence and harsh lines that were unprecedented at the time. The film could rely on several stars who played their roles with great enthusiasm, with Samuel L. Jackson becoming one of the most sought-after actors. In this film, Tarantino capitalized on the thousands of hours he spent watching B-movies from around the world. It was evident that he could make something out of these ideas... Overall impression: 80%.
