Poslednij bogatyr: Koreň zla (2020)

anglais The Russian fantasy film The Last Knight got a sequel and it's more or less on a similar wave as the first one, it won't disappoint fans of fantasy fairy tales. The first part intrigued with the idea of a hero from the present world entering the fairy tale world of mythical creatures, which is a great idea. And now, thanks to a magical sword, he has the ability to switch between worlds indefinitely, until he gets on the radar of a powerful witch. I'm a bit disappointed that The Last Knight is aimed more towards younger viewers, but the production design and the visuals are solid, the action is decent, and the fantasy creatures are once again interesting. I would definitely welcome something darker and more brutal, but considering the dying fantasy genre, I appreciate every attempt that is at least entertaining and nicely shot. There are a few very decent ideas (the cottages!). 7/10.

Recalled (2021)

anglais A stylish, smart, and very demanding mystery thriller from South Korea. The story focuses on a woman who suffers from post-traumatic stress and memory loss, and has disturbing visions of fatal accidents when looking at other people. It could have been a Korean variation of Final Destination, but the plot soon takes a completely different direction, and what seemed like the basic structure of the story turns out to be more of a link to something bigger. Undoubtedly, it is excellently and originally conceived, but all this thinking actually gave me a headache. Everything twists and turns constantly, the plot lines keep changing, and the twists are presented in a rather confusing, chaotic, and overly complicated manner. It really requires a great deal of attention, if you stop thinking for even five minutes, you get lost and can turn off the movie and start over. The basic concept can be understood, but the film definitely requires further viewings, similar to Tenet, in order to fully comprehend the whole puzzle correctly. I was quite annoyed by two male characters who were incredibly similar, and I admit that at times I got quite lost in what was happening. I believe that the film will end up with a red rating on FilmBooster and people who enjoy thinking and complex stories will be satisfied, but there was so much going on here that I couldn't fully enjoy it. 6.5/10.

Sound of Violence (2021)

anglais Finally something interesting in the horror genre after the last sad and dry two months. It is still on the edge and I hesitated a bit because it has a few things that bothered me, but I will slightly overrate it because why not. Sound of Violence has a pretty original story about a young girl who regains her hearing after the brutal murder of her family. She develops a strong fascination with different sounds and starts experimenting with them. It is nicely shot, the concept is original, and the two female leads are likeable. In the middle of the film, it transitions into a quite stylish slasher with very original torture and murders (four quite intensive and unpleasant gore scenes) and, above all, it has charm and feels refreshing within the genres. As for the downsides, the pacing is sometimes quite sluggish, because apart from those murders and decent music, the rest of the film stumbles and doesn't really have anything to dazzle with; the atmosphere and tension don't play a big role here. But for the original concept and genuinely unpleasant and stylish murders, I will gladly add an extra star. 7/10.

Seance (2021)

anglais Simon Barrett, a screenwriter who has worked with Adam Wingard, is responsible for films such as The Guest, You're Next and V/H/S. Now he has decided to try directing for the first time, but unfortunately he should have stayed with writing. Seance reminded me a little of Ouija that turns into a slasher towards the end, but it's weak. In the 90s, this could have been a hit alongside Scream, but today it doesn't really have anything to offer. The story focuses on a new student arriving at a girls' academy, where unexpected deaths soon occur. It's relatively well shot, the girls are pretty, and that's about it. Most of the time, it deals with teenage girl problems, there is no real horror, not much blood, the killer is quite easy to guess, and it also features lesbians, it's some kind of new trend! For me, it's a pointless film that is neither entertaining, nor brutal, nor scary, so it's below average. Young teenage girls can add a star to it if they want. 4/10.

The Retreat (2021)

anglais Uninteresting, not very ambitious, and actually quite useless. The Retreat is saved from being rubbish thanks to its quite decent camera work and relatively fine visuals. It’s nice that it that it doesn’t look like cheap crap from a clearance bin, but horror fans won't find anything interesting. The film focuses on an unlikeable lesbian couple who go on a relaxing getaway to have a nice weekend, only to encounter a group of militant assholes who have the desire to murder them. The central duo is unlikeable and I didn't actually care about their fate. The villains are not offensive, but there’s nothing extraordinary, the gore is mostly off-camera although they showed at least two scenes at the end when there was nothing else. There can't be any talk of tension or atmosphere, it's not entertaining either, and nothing really attractive or interesting happens there most of the time. Everything was done somewhere else and several times better, but thanks to its 80-minute runtime, it can be survived with one viewing. 4/10.

Army of the Dead (2021)

anglais Unfuckingbelievable things comes true and I'm excited like never before! Since World War Z and Train to Busan, there hasn't been a more epic zombie flick, and if someone can't appreciate it, they're an ungrateful cold swine and have become my number one enemy! Zack Snyder evolves zombies into intelligent, fast, and organized bad ass assholes, and I swallowed it all up and sold myself to him like a €20 prostitute at a train station. Zack Snyder gets completely unleashed chains with a pumped-up opening, undoubtedly the best zombie opening in the history of cinema, followed by an entertaining introduction to the characters and the recruiting of the team members. No character is superfluous and the viewer cares about each of them. Matthias Schweighöfer may not be another Kano, but he handles the humor cleverly, the zombie make-up effects are amazing, the action is uncompromising and grand. Zack Snyder takes gore to the next level, and there may not have been a bigger carnage in horror since Evil Dead. I also have to praise the music and the occasionally unpleasant atmosphere (walking among hibernating zombies is downright beautifully horrifying, and I was reminded of Silent Hill). The fight with the tiger is the best animal attack since The Revenant! And the finale crushes balls like nothing in a long time, I was literally experiencing heart attack states. There are also plenty of interesting and innovative ideas here like zombie animals, intelligent zombies that know martial-arts, hibernating zombies, a zombie heist, pregnant zombies, and the traps in front of the vault. Of course, according to local ratings, people naively expected twists like in Game of Thrones and cry over how stupid, action-packed, brutal, and stylish it is. Well, I would prefer to lock them up in a pen among other sheep so they can watch another drama, preferably about a black lesbian, a woman of the 21st century, a vegan, a superior feminist, an influencer visiting Starbucks and swiping on Tinder in the evenings, with a son addicted to drugs and facing murder charges. Oh, that would surely be a more fulfilling experience. Hopefully, another great zombie film will come out in another six years. If Father 2 comes out before the sequel to this, I will vomit fire. 10/10.

Hôtel Transylvanie 2 (2015)

anglais I liked the second part the most. The animation doesn't completely take your breath away, but the setting of the castle with monsters and the humour work (with lots of horror references that I enjoyed). It’s very entertaining and the story is also fine. Decent. 8/10.

Corporate Monster (2019)

anglais Ha, this is a blast!! The main character gets new pills from the doctor and starts seeing monsters (read Lovecraft). Are they hallucinations or are they really among us? Excellent psycho with perfect gore and an interesting twist. Filmed wonderfully, nothing to fault here. Really good. 8/10.

No Reason (2010)

anglais TORTURE/GORE PORN!! Twisted madness from Germany! Only for a marginal, extreme, and hardened audience! A completely unhinged Olaf Ittenbach tries to create a story about the afterlife, where the female lead is trapped in an allegory of torture and bloody slaughter to find enlightenment. The protagonist is full frontal naked for almost 80% of the film and goes through various levels (red, blue, green), where she witnesses the suffering of people around her to find her true values and learn a lesson for what she has done! The excessive and over the top gore is served here to such an extent that it will make weaker individuals feel sick. Blood flows in abundance, with limbs, male genitalia, and pieces of skin literally torn apart in great detail, it's truly unbelievable!! In one sequence, the horror resembles a perverted German porn flick, which soon turns into a brutal splatter fest! There are things I have never seen anywhere else, and those who enjoy proper uncompromising butchery will be buzzing with delight! In the end, there is even a small surprise, and it all somewhat makes sense. Definitely a decent underground affair! Olaf at its best! 7/10.

La Vague (2008)

anglais It has a quite innovative and original concept, but the execution and the actors are rather average. The finale is shocking and disturbing, but I was hoping for it to escalate a bit more and especially sooner. 6/10.
