Pulp Fiction (1994)

anglais A cult-classic that passed me by in a hundred kilometer arc. For me, it's nothing more than some solid dialogue, solid performances and Tarantino's direction, which I generally don't find very appealing.

Le Parrain (1972)

anglais A story of gigantic proportions, its adaptation into a screenplay undoubtedly required a very skillful hand. Coppola’s direction is excellent, the pace is indeed very slow, but the scenes from Sicily are captivating and overshadow the relative feeling of emptiness from the beginning of the film. There are many characters and someone who hasn't read the book, will need to see the film multiple times. The performances by the actors are stunning. Above all, Al Pacino's transformation is masterfully portrayed. The enormous running time, of course, is understandable and most likely it couldn't have been done differently. The action is nothing special, but that can be overlooked. The relationships between the characters are well depicted, but in my opinion, The Godfather is not the best mafia movie of all time.

La Passion du Christ (2004)

anglais Those brutal scenes that everyone take dso much about weren't really that terrible. Rather than being naturalistic, they were just very bloody. In terms of craftsmanship, it is again precise, but that is not new for Mel Gibson. As for the content, there is nothing left but to describe it as controversial. The music is breathtaking.

Glory (1989)

anglais Another quality film dealing with American history, specifically the Civil War. Edward Zwick is a very capable director who knows how to shoot, and war sequences are his specialty. The final attack on the fortress is truly powerful. The actors are solid (especially Morgan Freeman in the role of a black sergeant, he is excellent!) and of course, the master of music James Horner with another superb composition.

Casino (1995)

anglais The fact is that Martin Scorsese is playing it safe to some extent. In terms of form and narrative style, Casino is quite similar to Goodfellas, Mean Streets, and even Raging Bull and The Godfather, it depicts the rise, peak, and fall of a person and their close ones. However, it must be noted that Scorsese excels again, receiving top marks with a star. The captivating period feeling that he captured in Goodfellas is also present here. The scenes are similarly crafted and shot, there is similar period music, almost the same actors, and brutality is not spared either. Maybe the story is not as extensive and fast-paced as in Goodfellas, but it doesn't bother me. Scorsese again magnificently leads the ensemble cast. Robert De Niro, who took on the lead role this time, studied his character and portrayed him wonderfully, rightfully becoming the strongest acting element of the film, along with the excellent Sharon Stone. Joe Pesci toned it down a bit compared to his unforgettable performance in Goodfellas, but there were still a few of his typical outbursts. Scorsese directs in a top-notch manner, and maturity, and literal life experience shine from every shot. Overall, Casino is formally well-crafted and stylishly made, a gem that has not lost, and will never lose, its brilliance, style, charm, maturity, and power.

Retour à Cold Mountain (2003)

anglais Cold Mountain is exactly as I wanted it; gentle, romantic, but also very rough and sincere. Anthony Minghella is a great director and storyteller, and Cold Mountain is a finely-tuned masterpiece down to the last detail, musically, technically, and dramaturgically.

En direct de Bagdad (2002) (téléfilm)

anglais This movie isn't playing games, it provides honest information about the war and that's where its strength lies. The story has a great pace and the cast, led by Michael Keaton and Helena Bonham Carter, excels in every shot.

Le Temps de l'innocence (1993)

anglais In terms of craftsmanship and aesthetics, this film is top-notch. The camera work is excellent, and the sets and locations are amazing. The story, however, is peculiar at least. The first half in particular is slow and incredibly tedious. I really liked the storytelling style, but the pace really needed to be faster. Nevertheless, the depiction of the lifestyle of that time is precise.

Platoon (1986)

anglais Platoon captures one of the most realistic atmospheres I have ever seen in war movies, and some scenes like the Vietnamese village are so intense that they take your breath away. Oliver Stone showed us the true face of the Vietnamese hell in the jungle.
