Peaky Blinders - Episode 1 (2013) (épisode)

anglais Impressive production design, high-budget feel, period bangers, superbly written dialogue, a charmingly charismatic Murphy and a slightly Tarantino-like Sam Neill. Huge potential for the next episodes and impressive pulling of strings from the start.

affiche

Coco (2017)

anglais A cute colorful mashup with a cool Mexican vibe that has all the right values and ingredients to make it look like it came out of some pint-sized Rolls Royce treadmill.

affiche

Marvel's Daredevil (2015) (série)

anglais An ambitious TV adaptation of a well-known comic book, in the spirit of the dark Batman universe made by Christopher Nolan, but lacking the proper epicness, sophistication of the characters and their motivations and, last but not least, a sufficient dose of drama and realism, which fades away over time, especially with the third series. Good stuff, but there’s no need for further episodes and, unlike Punisher, there’s probably no interest either.

Marvel's Daredevil - Season 3 (2018) (saison)

anglais If a fan of the series skips Season 3, they won’t be missing much. Punisher and Elektra are gone and Fisk is again doing things for a better future, just like in the first season. Everything is even more far-fetched, more muddled and more of a stretch. Apart from perhaps a few episodes that stray from the classic triangle of main characters and bring a fresh wind to the plates (e.g. the Karen episode), it's same old same old. I can’t be bothered with a fourth season. Also, this season is missing an over-the-top single take scene like the stairs from he Season 1 or the prison from Season 2. And there's Bullseye, who had so much potential.

Marvel's Daredevil - La Serviette en papier (2018) (épisode)

anglais A decent finale, with a bland final fight that fits the overall style and flavour of the third season, which wanted to offer a lot, wanted to make the most of Wilson Fisk's character, but didn't quite succeed script-wise.

affiche

Marvel's Daredevil - Dernière fois (2018) (épisode)

anglais As a crime drama it's passable, the work with the characters and their motivations is decent, but it's too long, drawn out, sterile, like the entire third season. Put Kingpin, Bullseye and Daredevil in the ring and we're good to go.

affiche

Marvel's Daredevil - Les Retrouvailles (2018) (épisode)

anglais The best scene is the one that has little to do with the main storyline: the conversation about a picture. Make it to the finale and let’s be done with this drawn out series.

affiche

Secrets of the Saqqara Tomb (2020)

anglais Enthusiastic archaeologists and historians, authentic digging of ancient Egyptian tombs, and one insanely overblown piece of footage with an actually not very revelatory finale. A likeable documentary to remind us that there are people doing a pretty important thing over there. And one star higher for lovers of Egyptian history.

affiche

David Attenborough : Une vie sur notre planète (2020)

anglais An epitaph of humanity with room for a potentially successful future happy ending that is shrouded in uncertainty and question marks. Attenborough communicates it simply, engagingly and clearly. The idea is evident. An absolutely essential documentary that should not be missed by anyone.

Les Chemins du triomphe (2006)

anglais One of many sports flicks that doesn't stand out in anything, but doesn't offend, either. Racial discrimination in and out of sports, a good ensemble cast, a solid script and a surprisingly good Josh Lucas, otherwise almost exclusively a B-movie actor. It doesn't really offer anything more than a clash of two races at a time when many things were still taboo and a lot of prejudice against blacks was quite normal. Glory Road describes the rise of dark-skinned athletes in basketball in a fairly humorous yet relatively spirited and classy way, which also meant taking basketball to the next level, as we know the NBA today.
