Les Âmes libres (1931)

anglais Lionel Barrymore gives a very good performance here and manages to draw attention to himself, although admittedly he does it in a slightly theatrical way in places. For its time, the film contains a fairly interesting storyline and is not afraid of having some controversy, though of course it is more in the realm of words. But the topic is not bad.

Bon Cop, Bad Cop (2006)

anglais I saw the second film first, which I liked as a comedy, but Bon Cop, Bad Cop is even better in that it works a little better as a fairly dark whodunit, where the main characters can still be funny, but it's not at the expense of a suspenseful and at times quite gritty investigation. The first film is also sexier.

Život je život (2015)

anglais This is a bad attempt at making a Czech version of The Man from Acapulco, where at least the scenes that take place in Vetchý's fantasy have a little bit of pizzazz. Otherwise, it's a classic effort to show that family is the most important thing and that everything works out fine if people love each other. Or at least that they will continue to live in their "security".

Lego Batman, le film (2017)

anglais This was exactly as I expected and hoped. It’s a great ride from start to finish, with a joke every now and then, either in the dialogues or purely in the situations. It also has the pop culture, mostly comic book references, and no one is going to be able to get them all. This film managed to pull me in and keep me interested the entire time.

Bébé mode d'emploi (2010)

anglais Katherine Heigl and Josh Duhamel were fine, the chemistry between them worked quite well, but the script put so much crap in their mouths that I wanted to cry, especially towards the end. It wasn’t so much with emotion, but just with how stupid it was and how it had to lead to the exact conclusion you expected. The ending bothered me and overall it brought down a film that had started quite well.

Musíme si pomáhat (2000)

anglais This is one of those Czech films that revisits the Second World War and does it in a way that can get to you. It's as if Hřebejk managed to do his best work before the end of the millennium. The film is mainly carried by Bolek Polívka, who excels as an actor, but it is others who make this story human and beautiful.

Une journée particulière (1977)

anglais Sophia Loren and Marcello Mastroianni are two actors who are a great match for each other, and their films together are simply a demonstration of how chemistry can work between actors, with the added benefit of supporting their acting abilities. They work well together and they convey the proper strong and emphatic emotions to the viewer, not only in the ending.

Zpívající film (1972)

anglais I don't like edited films, I don't understand the point of them because it's still better to watch the originals. You'll probably recognize most of them, but some are unfamiliar to me. It is all the more unfortunate that nothing more detailed is said about them here. This actually deprives Zpívající film of the documentary function it could have had. The stars I’m giving it are for the few new scenes with Waldemar.

Bon Cop Bad Cop 2 (2017)

anglais I didn't think the sequel would be very interesting, but it proved that if you have good characters and a sense of humor, you can make a film that will also be funny the second time around. It really is funny, it has a pretty good plot and emotional scenes, but most of all great humor, which is never awkward or stupid.

Justice (2017)

anglais This is a western that really doesn't play at being anything. The title gives away right away what it’s going to be about, which is not a bad thing, because this is all about certainty. The bad guys are plaguing the town, they have hurt a good man, but there is hope that his brother will avenge his death and maybe even help the nice inhabitants. Nothing new under the sun. But heck, why not?
