Le Grand Méliès

This simple story, both nostalgic and exalting, introduces the audiences to the main stages in the life of the pioneer film director. Formally interesting are the performances by Mélies's real-life wife and the commentary read by their grand-daughter Marie-Georges and former colleague François Lallement. Despite certain clumsiness, the illustrative demonstrations of special effects or the scenes uncovering the background of film-making during the early years are truly interesting. (Summer Film School)
