Après le départ de sa femme, le docteur Melzin quitte Prague et s'installe dans un petit village. Peu à peu il gagne l'estime et la confiance des gens. A ses voisins, Pavla et Petr, qui désirent un enfant depuis longtemps, il conseille de consulter un spécialiste. Mais cette démarche blesse l'orgueil de Petr qui abandonne sa femme. Pavla elle, héberge Markéta, une jeune femme enceinte, chassée de son domicile par sa mère. (Festival International du Film de La Rochelle)

A solidly made Czechoslovak melancholy film about the life of one man, portrayed by the best Czechoslovak actor ever – Mr. Rudolf Hrušínský.

Although František Vláčil and his magic with the camera and creating atmosphere are clearly felt in the film, and despite all his mastery and the presence of Rudolf Hrušínský, who rarely disappears from the camera's viewfinder, this is a film that does not even remotely approach the qualities of Vláčil's films from the previous decade. Vláčil managed to get what he could from the problematic source material, but the 70s with hidden censorship and self-censorship in conjunction with a generally distorted era by various supervisory commissions and bans simply did their part. This film is worth seeing, but I can't help feeling that compared to Adelheid, it is only half of an experience. Overall impression: 60%.
