Inagaki at last realized what a treasure he had in Mifune, and then exploited it to the full. Without his charismatic “just one look and you know I am God" aura, scenes like the one with the flies would have been hard to take seriously (despite a hint of humor) and not like a bad joke. However, the ending is the most important part, especially the finale on the island which makes the occasionally not so entertaining approx. three hundred minutes preceding it well worth watching.
