The protagonist of this balladistic film drama, Kós Ferenc, returns from the Soviet Union where he was a POW. He is trying to establish a home and start a new life in his house north of Lake Balaton. While he was away, his wife died and his little son had been reared by his sister-in-law, the hunch-backed Tera. Tera nurses Ferenc with loving devotion, and the man seems to be recollecting his lost strength. Everybody encourages him to marry again, and he eventually finds a suitable wife, Zsuzsa. The house is too small for them, yet Ferenc is unable to send Tera away who shows her painful self-sacrifice and her hatred for the new wife at every minute. Meanwhile, the rude forester tries to seduce Zsuzsa. Ferenc is unable to stand the tension, and grasping the opportunity offered by an incident, shoves Tera into a precipice. Upon learning this, Zsuzsa leaves him, and the desperate Ferenc gives himself up to the police. (texte officiel du distributeur)
