Debrecen, the 1890s. Nyilas Misi, the excellent pupil of the students' hostel, is sent a package from home. He does not even open it, rushing to the blind Mr. Pósalaky to read out to him from the newspaper, then bets the numbers dreamt by the old man at the lottery. His class-mates in the meantime have foraged on the contents of the package, but he is only interested in the letter from his mother. Misi gets access to further work: he will have to teach the Doroghy boy. Doroghy Bella is courted by Mr. Török. Misi helps them correspond with each other. Their numbers have been pulled out at the lottery, but Misi lost the bond. It has been found by Mr. Török, with whom Bella elopes from home. Doroghy and Pósalaky both complain about Misi. Faced with the malicious disciplinary committee he is trying to defend himself in vain, then loses consciousness in his shame. Truth is revealed and he is comforted by his mother, but he does not want to be a pupil in Debrecen any more. (texte officiel du distributeur)
