There are years when nothing happens and then days that change the course of history. Director Gabriele Zamparini and producer Lorenzo Meccoli met from September 2002 to May 2003 with intellectuals, journalists, university professors, writers, historians, political analysts, civil rights leaders, international observers, human rights organisations and many more, asking questions to understand these years in which we are living and try to put together the many pieces of a complicated puzzle. Is it possible to find interconnecting links within the voices of dissent? The picture that comes alive is – to paraphrase James Baldwin – “longer, larger, more various, more beautiful, and more terrible than anything anyone has ever said about it”. XXI Century, a documentary film in seven parts with a total length of 350 minutes, tries to give some answers but above all wants to keep asking questions. It tries to look at problems from a new angle, since the makers agree with Albert Einstein’s maxim ‘the mere formulation of a problem is far more often essential than it’s solution’.
