D'origine modeste, George Eastman a résolu, dès son plus jeune âge, de se hisser au-dessus de sa condition. L'occasion s'en présente un jour grâce à son oncle, qui lui offre un petit emploi dans son usine. Là, George fait la connaissance d'Alice, une ouvrière dont il devient rapidement l'amant. Son ambition dévorante conduit le jeune homme à accepter de se joindre à une soirée mondaine, sur l'invitation de son oncle. Il y rencontre Angela Vickers. Celle-ci, issue d'une bonne famille, tombe sous le charme de George. Elle le présente à ses parents et commence à nourrir des projets qui lui ouvriraient les portes de l'ascension sociale. Cependant, Alice vient contrecarrer cette belle perspective d'avenir lorsqu'elle annonce à George qu'elle est enceinte... (Paramount Pictures FR)
