Witold Rowicki, the famous conductor, is portrayed in his capacity as musical leader of the National Philharmonic Orchestra. They are rehearsing parts from a composition by Krzysztof Penderecki. The film itself is a peculiar symphony of music, rhythm and gestures. The piece of music that is being rehearsed is the requiem 'Tribute to the victims of Hiroshima'.
