Ancien hors-la-loi, le shérif Frank Patch n'est plus en odeur de sainteté à Cottonwood Springs où, d'une main de fer, il fait régner ordre et justice. Alors que son tableau de chasse de douze bandits envoyés six pieds sous terre attire de nouveaux prétendants à une réputation d'as de la gâchette, ses méthodes brutales commencent à déplaire à des notables d'autant plus inquiets que le shérif connaît leur secret. Pour remplacer un Patch qui devient un obstacle dans l'évolution de la ville vers la modernité, ceux-ci envisagent une solution : l'éliminer.
