anglais Jiří Sequens, master of atmosphere! Of course, there is ideology in The Unconquered, and personally, as a supporter of Edvard Beneš, I will never agree with anyone who labels him a scared wimp and doesn't think any further. But such ideas and other moments like "the working people will rule the world" or quoting Klement Gottwald are fortunately minimal in this film. The main thing is, as I indicated with my opening exclamation, the atmosphere. And it's really great from the opening shot of the guns over Prague to the very end. You feel the loneliness of the soldiers at the mercy of the enemy, you feel their anguish, fear and anger, and it is a credit to the direction, the music and the actors. The final half-hour with the Germans slowly advancing in complete silence, coming out of the smoke and surrounding the Czechoslovak crew waiting for the best moment to fire the first shot, that half-hour is definitely one of the best in our war film. I was holding my breath with excitement, and I'm not exaggerating one bit. ()
