Janvier 1969, un boeing 737 atterrit dans une petite ville perdue du bush australien. A bord de l'avion, le célèbre trompettiste de jazz Billy Cross voyage avec son orchestre. Les habitants se précipitent, dont John 'Dingo', douze ans. Les musiciens s'installent sur la piste et soudain la musique éclate : Billy Cross joue pour le village.
