A la fin des années trente, Gilda, franco-américaine, est photographe à Paris. Elle partage son coeur entre Guy, un jeune Britannique idéaliste et fauché, et Mia, une élève infirmière espagnole, strip-teaseuse à ses heures. Ils vivent tous les trois dans un tourbillon permanent ponctué de fêtes, de bulles de champagne, de légèreté et d'amour jusqu'au jou où Guy et Mia s'engagent en Espagne aux côtés des Républicains. This is an incredibly pleasant film. It's set between 1924 and 1944, and if it weren't for that final wartime chapter, it would get an absolutely perfect score from me. In the way that it plays out, Head in the Clouds slips lightly into the clichés of war stories, but thanks to the loose morals and the links to the Spanish Civil War alone, we thankfully don't find ourselves in the traditional catharsis made so famous by the likes of Malena or, more recently, Black Book. Charlize Theron, Stuart Townsend, and Penélope Cruz are a perfect threesome, the production design is generally very realistic, the erotic tension is consuming, and the eyes have their dose of nourishment, making it absolutely fine.

The 1930s brought to life on canvas exactly as they should look: full of brilliance, nobility, and with a pleasant touch of unobtrusive poetry. But there are quite a few flaws. Occasionally, the film lacks momentum and the pace is overall quite uneven.
