In 1832, after years of exotic travel and social climbing, Anne Lister returns to Halifax, West Yorkshire, determined to transform the fate of her faded ancestral home, Shibden Hall. To restore Shibden Hall to its former glory, Anne must re-open her coal mines and marry well. But this isn't just another Regency romance. Charismatic, single-minded, swashbuckling Anne Lister – who dressed head-to-foot in black and charmed her way into high society – has no intention of marrying a man. True to her own nature, she plans to marry a woman. And not just any woman: the woman Anne Lister marries must be seriously wealthy. Every part of Anne's story is based in historical fact, recorded in the four million words of her diaries that contain the most intimate details of her life, once hidden in a secret code that is now broken. Critique de l’utilisateur·trice Necrotongue pour cette série (9)

Season 1 (2019) (S01)

anglais The first season set off two main storylines, the first sometimes dwelt too much on the forbidden relationship between the two protagonists, the second dealt with the issue of black coal mining disappointingly little. It’s a shame that the creators got too caught up in the standard "she loves me, she loves me not" trope, because I think they could have gotten much more out of this theme with a little effort. ()

Retour à Shibden Hall (2019) (S01E01)

anglais The first episode was clearly "introductory," and I also rate it as such. I should be angry and see red because the main heroine is a typical material for contemporary propaganda - a lesbian and capable, strong, intelligent woman with her own opinion. I myself am surprised that I don't actually mind it in this case. I would have a much bigger problem with the series if it were a testosterone romance, and I would have to constantly watch a dry zip. ()

Je n'y suis allée que pour étudier l'anatomie (2019) (S01E02)

anglais According to my opinion, there has been a certain improvement compared to the previous installment. Since it was no longer necessary to introduce individual characters, the creators could focus more on the actual plot. Even though it was purely a conversational matter, I had a pretty good time. ()

C'est comme ça que vous dites ? (2019) (S01E03)

anglais I really like that the series is not only about (for its time) an atypical relationship, but also intriguing when it comes to coal mines. As if that wasn't enough, there is still a search for the perpetrator of a traffic accident, and as a cherry on top, the creators offered interesting details about the pig breeding at the Sowden family's, so I am satisfied. ()

La Plupart des femmes sont ternes et stupides (2019) (S01E04)

anglais The fourth episode slightly lost its interest, its plot focused too much on Miss Walker's disturbed mental state and there was not enough time for intrigue in the mining industry. I was entertained by the visit to the stiff Victorian Priestleys, but the Sowden's pigsty did not bring me any bonus entertainment, so I stayed with three stars. ()

Récitez-moi encore vos verbes irréguliers (2019) (S01E05)

anglais I added one extra star compared to the previous installment, even though I was incredibly annoyed by the constant meddling in the moods of the unstable Miss Walker. I actually had a great time watching the unamusing (and therefore persistent) Mr. Ainsworth, the typical Victorian starchy lady Mrs. Pristley, and the desperately impressionable Miss Parkhill. ()

Est-ce l'usage pour une dame ? (2019) (S01E06)

anglais The plot of the sixth episode didn't impress me with anything significant, so I couldn't give it a higher rating, although the episode wasn't bad at all. What disappointed me the most was that the creators focused mainly on romantic relationships, and coal mining was left on the sidelines. But when winter asks... ()

Pourquoi as-tu emporté ça ? (2019) (S01E07)

anglais Hmm, it is already clear that such a course of episodes will probably be a standard for this series, which is a pity, I think there is potential for a much better result here. It would be enough to limit the constant relationship crises and focus more on coal. Yes, I am from Karvinsko, so what?!! ()

Pardon, tu disais quelque chose ? (2019) (S01E08)

anglais I ultimately gave the final episode of the first season four pieces, even though the overly sugary ending annoyed me a bit. The plot was, however, livelier this time, the journey across the continent of the story helped, and the creators finally addressed the difficulties in building the mine, although it was mainly a calculation and a hook for the next season on their part.
