In 1832, after years of exotic travel and social climbing, Anne Lister returns to Halifax, West Yorkshire, determined to transform the fate of her faded ancestral home, Shibden Hall. To restore Shibden Hall to its former glory, Anne must re-open her coal mines and marry well. But this isn't just another Regency romance. Charismatic, single-minded, swashbuckling Anne Lister – who dressed head-to-foot in black and charmed her way into high society – has no intention of marrying a man. True to her own nature, she plans to marry a woman. And not just any woman: the woman Anne Lister marries must be seriously wealthy. Every part of Anne's story is based in historical fact, recorded in the four million words of her diaries that contain the most intimate details of her life, once hidden in a secret code that is now broken. Season 1 (2019) (S01)

anglais The first season set off two main storylines, the first sometimes dwelt too much on the forbidden relationship between the two protagonists, the second dealt with the issue of black coal mining disappointingly little. It’s a shame that the creators got too caught up in the standard "she loves me, she loves me not" trope, because I think they could have gotten much more out of this theme with a little effort. ()

Retour à Shibden Hall (2019) (S01E01)

anglais The debut episode was undeniably "introductory," and I'm rating it as just that. Now, typically, I'd be seeing red over the main heroine being what feels like a poster child for current trends — a lesbian, capable, strong, intelligent, and fiercely independent. But oddly enough, I'm not actually bothered by it in this instance. ()

Je n'y suis allée que pour étudier l'anatomie (2019) (S01E02)

anglais There's been a noticeable improvement from the last episode. With no need to introduce characters, the creators could really dig into the plot this time. Even though it was mostly dialogue-driven, I had a pretty good time. ()

C'est comme ça que vous dites ? (2019) (S01E03)

anglais I like how this series isn't just about your run-of-the-mill relationship drama; it throws in some intrigue in the coal mines. And just when you think that's it, they throw in a bit of a mystery with that traffic accident. Oh, and let's not forget about the fascinating details they threw in about pig breeding at the Sowdens. ()

La Plupart des femmes sont ternes et stupides (2019) (S01E04)

anglais The episode fell a bit flat for me, with too much focus on Miss Walker's mental state and not enough on the intrigue in the mining industry. The visit to the uptight Victorian Priestleys was amusing, but the scenes at Sowden's pigsty didn't add any extra entertainment value. So, I’m sticking with three stars for this one. ()

Récitez-moi encore vos verbes irréguliers (2019) (S01E05)

anglais Miss Walker's constant mood swings were incredibly annoying, but I had a great time watching the unwitting (and therefore persistent) Mr. Ainsworth, the classic Victorian starchy lady Mrs. Priestly, and the hopelessly impressionable Miss Parkhill. ()

Est-ce l'usage pour une dame ? (2019) (S01E06)

anglais The plot didn't wow me, sbut it wasn't a bad episode. What let me down the most was the focus on romantic relationships, leaving the coal mining storyline on the sidelines. ()

Pourquoi as-tu emporté ça ? (2019) (S01E07)

anglais It seems like this pattern is going to be the norm for this series, which is a shame because I think there's potential for something much better. If only they toned down the constant relationship drama and focused more on the coal storyline. ()

Pardon, tu disais quelque chose ? (2019) (S01E08)

anglais The overly sweet ending bugged me a bit, but the plot was more lively this time around, and the journey across the continent added some nice depth. Plus, the creators finally touched on the challenges of building the mine, though it felt like they were mostly setting us up for the next season. ()
