1868. Le taciturne Howard Kemp se lance à la recherche du meurtrier Ben Vandergroat, espérant empocher une prime alléchante. Dans une nature rocailleuse, il fait la rencontre de deux hommes à la moralité douteuse, qui l’accompagnent dans sa quête. Minimum gunfights, minimum action, a lot of conversation, and only a few actors. Nevertheless, Anthony Mann managed to shoot one of the best westerns (or at least one that easily ranks among the best), because he understood that a western can also be about people and that it will work with them. James Stewart is excellent in the role of an unpleasant guy, which I wouldn't have believed before the movie.
