Pendant la Seconde Guerre mondiale, le capitaine Antonio Corelli, dirige une garnison italienne qui a pris position dans l'île grecque de Céphalonie. Lui-même s'installe dans la résidence du médecin local, le Dr Iannis, et de sa ravissante fille Pelagia. D'abord offensée, Pelagia s'habitue peu à peu à la présence du capitaine. Celui-ci charme la population locale et tombe amoureux d'elle. Or, Pelagia est fiancée à Mandras, un pêcheur parti rejoindre les rangs des partisans grecs et dont elle n'a pas de nouvelles. Antonio remet alors en question les raisons qui l'ont amené à intégrer l'armée italienne. Durant ses jours d'occupation, il s'adapte à la vie des paysans. Il souhaiterait y rester pour toujours, mais la levée des troupes est imminente. Alors que la guerre bat son plein, son coeur oscille entre Pelagia et son engagement envers sa patrie. Apart from Penélope, everything about this movie is wrong. And the worst of all is Nicholas Cage, who shouldn’t get such roles at all. Because what he shows here turns a drama into a comedy. The only thing left to admire in this movie are the beautiful locations of the Cephalonia Island, thanks to which I’ve become even fonder of Greece than before.

Throughout the film I felt that John Madden wanted to make an Oscar-worthy masterpiece. The beautiful locations, the pleasant atmosphere, and the skillful camera work keep the viewer engaged, and Penélope Cruz’s role was tailor-made for her. However, all that effort was pointless, as the film lacks the characteristics and parameters of a dramatically mature blockbuster and drowns in mediocrity.

It doesn't happen to me very often, even when I'm tired, but during Captain Corelli's Mandolin, I fell asleep for the last half hour. It was as if nothing else was going to happen, but you have to wait for that final meeting, which is ultimately necessary. It’s a lengthy romance that did little to show the horrors of war, though the film did do a great job in one scene.
