Depuis leur naissance, les deux frères Ben et Barnabas sont comme les deux doigts de la main. Barnabas, surnommé « Simpel », a 22 ans, mais le développement mental d’un enfant de 3 ans. Même si Simpel peut être terriblement casse-pieds et qu’il nécessite un encadrement de chaque instant, Ben aime son petit frère par-dessus tout. Quand leur mère meurt subitement, Simpel risque d’être envoyé dans un foyer. Les deux frères décident alors de mettre le cap sur Hambourg. C’est là qu’est censé vivre leur père, qu’ils n’ont pas vu depuis 15 ans. Le début d’un voyage plein d’aventures… (Zurich Film Festival)

A solid German drama about a handicapped brother, which milks your emotions from the beginning to the end. The premise is nothing new, but if you grow fond of the two brothers and keep hoping for a happy ending the entire time, you’re going to have a great time watching this. An exemplary European drama with exactly the kind of emotions a quality film should arouse, including wonderful acting performances naturally led by David Kross, who relished his role of the handicapped guy and delivered a really convincing performance. The Germans really deserve praise for this film. It’s been a while since I saw such a realistic drama that made me feel like I was living through it.
