Audrey, an overworked nurse, and her newscaster wife Carrie, live a comfortable and busy life with their adopted son, Brian. With a son who is succeeding academically and Carrie's network career looking up, their only worry seems to be that Audrey "cheats" on Carrie by getting her morning news from a rival news station. So, they are unprepared when a solemn stranger starts showing up everywhere - from Audrey's job to Brian's chess match - and seems to be watching them. The stranger turns out to be a private investigator bringing news that Audrey never thought she'd have to deal with, nor explain: Brian's biological mother Valerie, a cleaned-up junkie turned missing children advocate, has died after spending almost a decade looking for him. Now, Valerie's parents are determined to find their grandchild and raise him as their own. As the private investigator gets closer to the murky truth behind Brian's adoption, painful secrets about Audrey's past are unearthed that could mean not only the loss of her partner and son, but jail time. Desperate and confined to the unyielding rules of an unfair system, Audrey must use whatever means necessary to keep her family together in this interesting take on what's right, wrong, and in between.
