In October 2002, acclaimed Hong Kong director Clara Law (now resident in Australia ) read an article about Ali, a young asylum seeker from Afghanistan. Her subsequent film makes an impassioned plea for human rights, following an Australian family that begins writing to Ali and later journeys cross-country to meet the teenager. Letters to Ali is a fervent, committed work that addresses Australia’s treatment of refugees, capped by a poignant score by Paul Grabowsky. (Independent Cinema Office)
