Taisto est un jeune lapon au chômage lorsqu'il hérite miraculeusement d'une superbe voiture américaine après le suicide de son patron. Aussitôt, il part avec tout l'argent qu'il possède en direction d'Helsinki. A peine sur la route, il se fait passer à tabac et détrousser par deux voyous. Taisto débarque alors dans la capitale sans rien. Alors qu'il se fait jeter de tous les endroits où il postule, il fait la rencontre d’Irmeli, une jeune femme fantasque mère d'un petit garçon, qui cumule les petits boulots plutôt glauques. Le coup de foudre est immédiat entre ces deux originaux fauchés. Mais leur bonheur joyeusement bricolé est bousculé lorsque Taisto recroise l'un de ses agresseurs. (LaCinetek)

Aki Kaurismäki definitely did not become my favorite director with this. Although the film is interesting in terms of how it captures the environment and individual characters, I couldn't really empathize with the characters, or actually with the world that was presented. It felt like it was our world, but it still seemed strangely distant to me.

A very accessible romance in which Kaurismäki repeats the motif of escaping from social conditions, unlike the Calamari Union without humor and the motif of fateful love "on the edge of the law", but this time without the charming poetry of the periphery from Shadows in Paradise. It's just a nice story, this time told without fundamental irony and with an emphasis on fluidity. That's probably why I miss Kaurismäki's distinctive roughness hidden behind the apparent crispness - all that remains is the (undoubtedly cute) casual crispness.
