The Sinner

Vraiment excellent ! En fait, c’est nettement supérieur, plus prenant et plus intéressant que la série portée aux anges et sur-récompensée Big Little Lies, avec ses actrices hystériques que sont Dern et Witherspoon. Avant tout, j’apprécie le choix idéal qui a été fait pour les deux personnages centraux. Jessica Biel est extrêmement convaincante et la star oubliée des années quatre-vingt-dix qu’est Bill Pullman fait son retour en grande pompe. Les deux personnages leur collent parfaitement à la peau et j’ai été impressionné par l’opiniâtreté et la dureté de caractère affichées par Bill. Cette minisérie confirme ma perception personnelle du monde et de l’équilibre qui y règne et, par conséquent, elle m’a interpellé bien plus que quand on pousse des cris d’hystérie parce qu’un enfant a donné un bisou à un autre enfant à l’école maternelle. Bravo et vivement la deuxième saison qui, comme je viens de l’apprendre, serait en préparation ! (25/03/2018)

It’s been quite a few years since the Americans found out that a good premise can be stretched into a series while still being expensive, spectacular and unforgettable. In the last fifteen years, America underwent a TV series revolution, which greatly increased the quantity of the series they made, as well as their quality; what is now considered standard was a spectacularexperience fifteen yearsago. So looking for something unique in this deluge of quality series is like looking for a needle in a haystack; possible but difficult. And one of the series that is able to rise above the current American series standard is The Sinner. Psychedelic, cold, depressing but effective, original and imaginative. Bill Pullman was a great fit for the role of the investigator, reminding the audience that he still has what it takes. He’s unorthodox and unique, and I think he’s the most important element in the entire conception. Other important elements are the premise and in season one also Jessica Biel. I felt like watching the first season of True Detective. I felt horrible but I couldn’t take my eyes off the screen. However, I’m taking one star off for the overly contrived plot, which on one hand doesn’t say anything and on the other says enough to finish one entire case. I’m fascinated by this series and am looking forward to more seasons. Thanks go to the Czech Television for bringing this to my attention! (28/11/2019)

The screenwriter doesn't hesitate and immediately after introducing his protagonist, he lets her brutally carry out a murder in an explosion of emotions. This arouses the expectations of fans of explicit violence. However, shortly after, he switches direction and it becomes increasingly clear that we are watching a psychological drama, where the exploration of the dark corners of the human psyche will take place, evoking memories of what we want to safely bury deep in the subconscious. I associate Jessica Biel with a beautiful face, which predestines her for the role of aesthetic additions to the story. I have always considered her acting to be average at best, but here she has risen to her best performance yet and at least she does not embarrass the series. However, the main attraction is Bill Pullman in the role of the investigator. I have doubts that this method of erasing memories would work in practice, but it is nicely filmed and evokes the right emotions in the right places. Overall impression of the 1st season: 75%.
