Season 1 (2017) (S01)

anglais The first season of the series was fantastic thanks to its amazing retro vibe and high-quality cast. Fortunately, the creators didn't end there, because there was also a very good script, so I was able to enjoy a good dose of excellent humor, complemented by a very well-managed drama. I've already pinpointed the details in my reviews of the individual episodes, so all I have left to say is that I'm looking forward to the second season. 4*+ ()

Pilote (2017) (S01E01)

anglais The pilot episode left me with mixed feelings. While it didn't immediately strike me as something extraordinary, the humor was there, though not enough to keep me laughing throughout. Initially, I expected it to be just average, but I found myself surprisingly entertained, and I hadn't once felt bored. ()

Ya Shivu v Bolshom Dome Na Kholme (2017) (S01E02)

anglais The second episode injected a healthy dose of energy into the plot. From the morning gym meeting, I was already grinning, but it wasn't until Thursday's dinner scene that things truly kicked into high gear. ()

Quand tu es parti (2017) (S01E03)

anglais I noticed a slight dip in pace in this episode. However, apart from that, I thoroughly enjoyed myself, and I'm particularly thankful to the creators for choosing Rachel Brosnahan for the lead role instead of someone like Elisabeth Moss. Dodged a bullet there! 4*+ ()

La Déception des sœurs Dionne (2017) (S01E04)

anglais This time around, I didn't find myself laughing out loud, but that's perfectly fine, because it seems the creators weren't aiming for that either. What impressed me was their ability to blend humor and drama seamlessly, keeping things engaging throughout. Abe's lines were hilarious, and it's mind-boggling to think that some husbands never truly find out what their wives look like after three decades of marriage. 4*+ ()

Doink (2017) (S01E05)

anglais Once again, Abe steals the show, even with just a few O.K.s thrown in. This episode had me chuckling more than usual, especially in the first half, before things took a serious turn. But hey, no complaints here — the blend of humor and drama was spot on. ()

Mme X au Gaslight (2017) (S01E06)

anglais When a series is not completely good, usually half of the season doesn't work. Sometimes the first half is weaker, in some cases it's the second half that doesn't appeal to me. It is easiest with bad series, where the whole season is weak. With all this I mean that I have already watched the sixth episode and so far I have not seen a bad episode, and that says something. ()

Prends ça ! (2017) (S01E07)

anglais You know, no offense to Miriam, but lately, I've been thinking that the real comedy stars of the show are Abe Weissman and his wife Rose. They consistently bring the laughs. Overall, another enjoyable and enlightening episode. It teaches us that spontaneity is cool, but... ()

Merci et bonsoir. (2017) (S01E08)

anglais Alright, the finale really hit the mark. I appreciate that the creators didn't try to wrap everything up in a neat bow, leaving room for a second season. It felt like a natural conclusion, and I'm eager to see where the story goes from here. Overall, it was a solid ending, and I'm excited for what's next. ()

Season 2 (2018) (S02)

anglais You can already tell from my rating that the second season made an even better impression on me than the first one. I was having fun the whole time, because Amy Sherman-Palladino wrote a great screenplay with characters that she fine-tuned after the previous season, which was exactly what the series needed. The character of Midge is great in itself, but Abe Weissman was really killing it in some moments. I was greatly satisfied. ()

Simone (2018) (S02E01)

anglais Miriam's character is undeniably well-crafted, and Rachel Brosnahan brings her to life brilliantly. However, it's her parents who steal the show on several occasions. Abe and Rose are just so charmingly portrayed that I can't help but adore them. Living under the same roof might be a bit much, but watching them from afar is a delight. 4*+ ()

Pas le cœur, mais juste en-dessous (2018) (S02E02)

anglais I'm genuinely hooked on this series, no denying it. While some half-hour episodes of other shows can feel like they drag on forever, here, it works the other way round. There's not a dull moment in sight — I'm too busy thoroughly enjoying myself from start to finish. ()

Le Purgatoire avec une belle vue (2018) (S02E03)

anglais The third episode was, so far, the weakest of the season for me, yet I can't label it as bad either. Abe and Rose remain my go-to for a good chuckle. If the upcoming episodes maintain at least the same standard, I'll be content. ()

En route pour les Castkills ! (2018) (S02E04)

anglais This was an absolute feast of snobbery, the kind you don't come across every day. As someone who enjoys movies and series set in Victorian England, I've seen my fair share, but this one takes the cake. I can't recall the last time I witnessed such a gathering of Jewish families on screen—maybe not since Schindler's List. ()

Minuit au Concord (2018) (S02E05)

anglais I thoroughly enjoyed my time in Catskills, surrounded by its captivating attractions that left me in silent awe. However, the final part at the Concorde hotel easily surpassed everything that Steiner Mountain Resort had offered me thus far. Abe:-) ()

Soirée de clôture (2018) (S02E06)

anglais While this episode may not have quite reached the heights of the previous one, I couldn't bring myself to deduct a whole star. Abe's confrontation with harsh reality was excellent, and his level of disillusionment was palpable. Tony Shalhoub truly shines in his role, as he always does, and I thoroughly enjoy his performance. 5*- ()

Et le bonnet en prime (2018) (S02E07)

anglais I'd easily give this episode four stars, if it weren't for two standout moments that really elevated it for me. Firstly, Rufus Sewell's almost walk-on part was nothing short of stellar, as expected from him. Secondly, Yom Kippur was another highlight. ()

Un jour viendra… (2018) (S02E08)

anglais I'm approaching this series with a hefty dose of uncritical enjoyment. Despite my efforts to critique, I can't help but get swept up in it all. The episode introduced a slew of "firsts": the first autograph, the first tour, the first fire, the first motel... And once again, I found myself thoroughly entertained. What can I say? 5 stars. ()

Votez Kennedy, votez Kennedy (2018) (S02E09)

anglais In my review of the previous episode, I highlighted several notable "firsts," and in the ninth episode, we witnessed a television first. It seems when things are on track, they really shine. The creators brilliantly revisited one of the major conflicts from the first season, and the television performance was a blast. Moreover, both conversations between fathers and sons were hilarious. ()

Seule, toute seule (2018) (S02E10)

anglais The creators decided not to give Miriam as much screen time this time, but they still crafted an engaging finale. True to form, it wasn't a flashy affair with fireworks or marching bands, but it struck the perfect balance between humor and drama, much like the rest of the series. ()
