The scene of the story is France in the early years of the 20th century. This is an age of anti-clericalism. Marie Lorrain, the wife of a religious country doctor Henry Vermont leaves her husband, starting a new, more colourful life in Pozsony with her new husband, Dernisse, leader of an anti-clerical party. Pierre, her son, born of her second marriage, lives among people without any religious conviction and is brought up by a careless governess. One day, the boy falls ill and even his doctor, having given up all hope of he pulling through, puts all his trust in God. The boy, therefore, is baptised in secret. The baptism, however, cannot be kept a secret, and when the party leader finds himself under attack from his enemies, he expels both his wife and his son from his home. The shock caused by the World War I leads the woman back to her former husband. (texte officiel du distributeur)
