The mass migration of South Koreans to West Germany began when the country invited them to join its workforce as nurses and miners. Most immigrants were planning to work for a few years, and then return to South Korea or to continue to the United States. Many, however, stayed for good. Mr. Kim & Sister Lotus begins with directors Sou-yen Kim and Miriam Rossius wanting to find out about their families' past. Their mothers, Sister Lotuses, continued their work as nurses and Kim's father as a miner in West Germany until they retired, even if, initially, they hadn't planned to stay the country. Did they gain something from immigrating, or did they lose what they had hoped to keep? The Korean friends of Kim's and Rossius' parents as well as the relatives who stayed behind in Korea explain reasons behind emigrating and not coming back. When the new country is so completely foreign, not adapting is not an option. But forgetting where you come from is even harder.
