The Night is about the day's umbra, a meeting of the night's motley outer landscapes and the inner ones. It's a portrait of the poet Willy Granqvist's long poem "The Night", published posthumously in 1987. "And something in particular hisses out. / A language / Composed of oxygen-rich complexity" he writes. The night dissolves, frightens, heightens anxiety, tears down all logical barriers and is creativity's consort. We find consolation and mirror ourselves in others' darkness. "The gaze is / Endless great and deep, suprised: as if / Death slowly clasped around your heart / And left the very limit lingering in the eye's / Lens" he continues. The film's poetic images and Granqvist's composite language meld for a markedly light experience. (Göteborg Film Festival)
