It's 1953 and Kilian leaves his Huesca mountains to set out, with his brother, on a journey to Fernando Poo, a distant and exotic land. There they are awaited by their father, a veteran at the Sampaka estate, where they make one of the world's best cocoas. In the colony they will discover the flippancy of social life compared to a corseted, dull Spain, experience the contrasts between settlers and natives and learn the meaning of friendship, passion, love and hate. The accidental discovery of a letter forgotten for years prompts Clarence to leave his Huesca mountains and travel to Bioko to visit the land where his father, Jacobo, and his uncle Kilian spent most of their youth, the island of Fernando Poo. In the entrails of a territory as exuberant and seductive as it is dangerous, Clarence unearths the secret of a forbidden love framed within turbulent historic circumstances, the consequences of which will rub off on the present day.
