Eight-year-old Pu is spending his summer holiday with his large family in the beautiful Dalecarlia region of Sweden. The most important people in his life are his mother and father and a preacher sometimes given to outbursts of anger and brutality. Pu has a crush on Maj, the maid, with whom he walks through the forest to fetch the evening milk. One Sunday Pu accompanies his father to a neighbouring parish where his father is to deliver a sermon. In Pu's eyes this becomes the most important event of the summer.
